FareShare and Leader started the Feed Melbourne Appeal in 2009. The campaign was prompted by a growing number of charities telling us that while they were being offered more and more food to help feed the increasing number of people in their communities seeking help, they did not have the means to store, cook, serve and distribute it.

Since 2000, Melbourne food charity FareShare has collected quality food from businesses such as supermarkets, wholesale markets, farmers, manufacturers, caterers, retailers and hospitality schools. FareShare transforms this food into 5,000 nutritious meals every day and provides them free-of-charge to more than 400 Victorian charities. FareShare also redistributes a large quantity of uncooked food directly to local charities. FareShare operates Australia’s largest charity kitchen and cooks more than one million, free meals a year from rescued food.
FareShare is funded by philanthropic foundations, businesses and the public. Some 800 regular volunteers assist our five chefs cook meals six days a week. Another 6,000 corporate and school volunteers lend their support each year too! It costs FareShare about 75 cents to rescue enough food to cook a meal and distribute it to a charity.
