How does the appeal work?

The Feed Melbourne Appeal is an annual fundraising appeal conducted by Leader Community News and FareShare. Every dollar raised by the appeal helps individuals and families in Melbourne who are struggling with food insecurity.

Through Leader Community News, we call on the community to join us in the fight against hunger in Victoria. Local food charities are encouraged to apply to the Foundation for a Feed Melbourne Appeal grant of up to $15,000. These grants allow charities to purchase vital infrastructure items and low-cost staple food stock to meet the increasing demand for meals or food hampers in their community. Bulk food orders and expensive items such as fridges, freezers and vans needed to cook, prepare and distribute food, are often beyond the reach of small cash-poor organisations.

The Feed Melbourne Appeal grant applications are thoroughly assessed by a special grants advisory panel who allocate two thirds of the appeal’s total revenue to the programs that will make the greatest impact on food relief in Victoria.

The remaining third of the appeal revenue is allocated to Melbourne based food rescue charity and Appeal partner, FareShare, a community group that operates Australia’s largest charity kitchen. FareShare works with businesses and supermarkets to rescue quality food destined for landfill and cooks 5000 free, nutritious meals every day. FareShare volunteers cook, pack and distribute this food to charities across Victoria to feed people experiencing hardship.

From 2011 to 2016, Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation matched donations made to the Feed Melbourne Appeal as part of its Food Security Initiative. Over six years, the Foundation’s support provided almost $1.4 million dollars of additional funding to local food programs helping vulnerable people in the community.
